Rose Society of Glendale Leads Off

The first rose show of the season was staged on April 3 in Glendale, AZ by the Rose Society of Glendale. The standard show report is here. The city of Glendale, incidentally, is located on the west side of Phoenix with a population of over 250,000 and is the actual home of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals. The rose society is relatively small but has many energetic members and always puts on a first class show and other events.

The year's first queen went to 'St Patrick', shown by our good friends Heidi & Terry Leavitt, an appropriate rose considering the show followed St Patrick's day by only a few weeks. The show added full floribunda royalty this year, with the floribunda spray queen going to 'Playboy', shown by the desert fox Hal Reynolds who motored over from Palm Springs for the event. Hal had two other sprays on the court, as well as three specimens on the HT court, taking home the large rose sweepstakes award. The best large horticulture award went to members Bill & Candy Shepherd for the winning entry of three blooms of 'Cajun Moon'. Their fourth specimen of 'Cajun Moon' also garnered king of show.

In the miniatures, formidable mini exhibitors Mike & Cindy Jepsen won queen with 'Miss Flippins' and had three other entries on both the mini and miniflora courts, taking home also the miniature sweepstakes award. Bill & Phyllis Henslin, who are appearing more often in the show results, won miniflora queen with 'Dr Troy Garrett'. Best mini horticulture went to the winning single, 'My Sunshine', shown by Nona Welsch.

There were several new names in the show results, including multiple awards going to Nancy O'Leary and Kitty Jorstad. Congratulations. A full report of the show results is available at the society website here. Thanks go to Dave Mahoney for sending in the report - Dave is always good about this.
